Westminster: Weeding out by Council and Parking Contractors

A group of Westminster City Council staff and the Council’s parking service contractors rolled their sleeves up last week when they volunteered to clear up the garden of Westminster Academy secondary school.

The garden at the school’s site, on Harrow Road, London W2, had become overgrown and littered with rubbish. The team, comprising David Campbell, Street Services Manager of the Council’s Parking Enforcement Service – NSL, Olivia Sandy of Triumph, Nick Kkafas of Serco Parking Suspensions, and Sara Sutton and Kieran Fitsall of Westminster City Council, got stuck in, clearing the site of weeds and rubbish, with help from some of the school’s pupils. The team also rebuilt fences and laid flower beds using sleepers donated by the Council.

Kieran Fitsall, Parking Service Development Manager at Westminster City Council said: “Inspired by the Olympics the team literally jumped at the opportunity to volunteer and help revitalise a garden for the school to enjoy. As well as giving us all the opportunity to give something back to the city we serve, it also proved to be a great team-building exercise.”

NSL’s David Campbell, said: “There was a great atmosphere on the day, and it felt like a real achievement for us to have rebuilt the Academy’s garden from what was a horrid mess, to a nice little area the Academy can be proud of.”

Since opening Westminster Academy has more than tripled its examination results at GCSE with 81% of students achieving five or more A* – C grades in August 2011 and 76% of Sixth Formers achieving A*-C. In 2012, the school achieved a 100% pass rate for the IB Diploma.
