Sara, 22, wants to become a paramedic, but finds it easier to learn in a practical environment. As an apprentice, she can fulfil her training needs, whilst also earning money. She decided to join NSL Care in Shrewsbury at the beginning of this year as an apprentice Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA). NSL is a patient transport provider working in partnership with the NHS, helping to get eligible patients to their medical appointments and back home again. One of the first things Sara is focussing on is how important it is to keep comfortable the non-emergency patients who rely on NSL’s patient transport.
Just six weeks into her apprenticeship and Sara is already reaping the rewards. She is well suited to her role as an Apprentice ACA; she is caring and enjoys helping people, and likes to know that she has made a difference to their day. But it’s not just the patients who are benefitting from Sara and her ongoing training; there have also been personal and professional benefits. She says: “I feel I have come out of my shell a lot already, and my confidence is at an all time high.”
Asked if she would recommend apprenticeships to others, she says: “Apprenticeships are a great opportunity for people like me who learn more by doing; who are more hands on.” Her manager, Mark Rawlings, agrees: “Apprentices are so keen to learn, they tend to have very positive can-do attitudes. Sara has so far made a real impact on our service delivery, which can
only be good news for our patients, for us, and for herself. We all win.”
