NSL launches new Academy to champion management apprenticeships


NSL, part of Marston Holdings Group, has today launched the NSL Academy for apprenticeship training. The Academy aims to help public sector organisations and private companies capitalise on the Government’s new ‘apprenticeship levy’ which will come into effect in April 2017. Building on the company’s proven and highly successful in-house service, the new NSL Academy will focus on Leadership and Management development programmes for the new “trailblazer” apprenticeships. Jason Stevens, an accomplished Organisation Development Consultant, has joined NSL as Programme Director for the new operation.

“When the new levy is introduced, the onus will be on organisations to invest in quality training programmes at all levels. It is vital that businesses and public sector service providers don’t miss out and indeed lose money,” says Jason Stevens.

“For levy-paying organisations, it is important they take decisive steps to recoup the costs they will incur from the deductions as it’s not just those paying a levy that will have access to the new Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS). The online portal created by the Government is open to all organisations looking to take advantage of the new approach to apprenticeships and to register new apprentices. We’ll be working closely with clients to provide them with the vision, drive and expertise to help them take full advantage of relevant and targeted apprenticeship training programmes as the new arrangements take shape.”

In preparation for the new apprenticeship initiative, the NSL Academy will be offering three Management and Leadership Apprenticeship programmes at levels 3, 5 and 6. The programmes have been fully approved by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), ensuring apprentices receive not only quality assured training but also a formal management qualification. These new apprenticeships will be offered to local authorities, government agencies and private sector service providers as well as within NSL’s own operations all over the country.

The Academy offers UK wide Learning and Development solutions through regional trainers and training facilities including a dedicated Training Centre located in NSL’s brand new operational base just off the M4. As well as a comprehensive induction programme and support, all apprentices of the new NSL Academy will benefit from individual learning plans and goals that meet their personal learning needs as well as the operational priorities of their employer.

Jason Stevens, the Academy’s new Programme Director, has spent more than two decades developing and defining effective leadership and management development programmes within major organisations and through his own training and development company. He has worked extensively in the UK as well as The Middle East for a diverse range of organisations, from the BBC and Moneysupermarket to Harveys and Oceaneering.

The apprenticeship levy will apply to all organisations with a wage bill in excess of £3million and replaces all taxpayer funding of apprenticeships for companies of all sizes. Deductions at a rate of 0.5% of an employer’s wage bill will be made through Pay as You Earn (PAYE) with effect from April 2017, and all revenue will be ring-fenced for use solely to fund apprenticeship training.
