Croydon Council appoints consultancy responsible for Exhibition Road transformation

Croydon Council has awarded its multi-million pound public realm and building fronts improvement work for Croydon’s high streets on London Road, in Old Town and in central Croydon to Project Centre, the urban design consultancy responsible for transforming London’s Exhibition Road, Kensington High Street and Walworth Road. The appointment followed a multi-stage OJEU procurement process. The Project Centre led design team includes, Studio Weave, Jan Kattein Architects, Phil Jones Associates, Urban Movement and Allen Scott Landscape Architects

The scheme, funded through the GLA Mayor’s Regeneration Fund and TfL’s Local Improvement Plans, is part of the wider Connected Croydon Programme of public realm improvements being undertaken in Croydon over the next two years which will seek to transform a series of key Croydon town centre high streets by enhancing existing local characteristics, building on a sense of local identity and pride. The project will also seek to enhance perception of the high streets by improving the physical and visual quality of the built environment, improve the pedestrian and cycle space, and help to attract more visitors by creating a sense of vibrancy and activity.

Project Centre has built up an impressive award-winning portfolio in urban streetscape design. In addition to the flagship Exhibition Road, it also won awards for the widely lauded Kensington High Street, and Southwark’s Walworth Road. Walworth Road achieved a hat trick of awards: a London Transport Award, a British Park Award, and a National Transport Award.

David Moores, Technical Director of Public Realm at Project Centre, said: “We are excited at the prospect of helping to transform the streetscape of Croydon through the enhancement of its already impressive local characteristics. This will be about improving the high street experience for all: businesses, pedestrians, visitors, cyclists, and local residents.”
